How to Choose the Right Table Lamp

A well-chosen table lamp balances proportion, style, and light quality.

1. Scale and Proportion

The lamp should be roughly one-third the width of the surface it sits on. Total height (base + shade) should allow the bottom of the shade to align with seated eye level — typically 58-64 inches from the floor when placed on a standard 24-28 inch side table.

2. Base Material and Weight

Ceramic and stone bases provide stability and visual weight. Brass and metal bases offer a lighter, more contemporary feel. Ensure the base is heavy enough to prevent tipping, especially in homes with children or pets.

3. Shade Selection

Linen shades diffuse light softly for ambient glow. Cotton shades provide brighter, more directed light. Paper shades create a warm, organic atmosphere. Dark interior shades focus light downward for task use; white interiors maximize overall output.

For a standard 24-28 inch side table, choose a lamp 26-32 inches tall (including shade). The shade diameter should be roughly equal to the table height. This creates balanced proportions.

Can I replace the lamp shade?

Yes. All NUMBO table lamps use standard harp and finial fittings, allowing you to swap shades easily. We offer replacement shades in multiple sizes and materials.

Do your table lamps include bulbs?

Table lamps are sold without bulbs to allow you to choose your preferred brightness and color temperature. We recommend 40-60W equivalent LED bulbs with warm white (2700K) color temperature.
