How to Choose the Right Console Table or Desk

Console tables and desks require careful attention to depth and proportion.

1. Measure the Space

Console tables typically run 12-18 inches deep and 36-72 inches long. Ensure at least 30 inches of walking clearance in front. For desks, minimum depth of 24 inches is needed for comfortable computer use.

2. Wall Proportion

The console should span two-thirds to three-quarters of the available wall length. This creates visual balance — too short looks lost, too long feels crowded. Leave 6-12 inches of wall on each end.

3. Function vs. Display

Pure display consoles can be as slim as 10 inches deep. Work surfaces need 24+ inches depth. Some designs include drawers or shelves for hidden storage, ideal for entryway organization or home office use.
