How to Choose Door Casing and Trim

Trim details are the subtle elements that define architectural quality.

1. Profile Style

Simple flat profiles suit contemporary and minimalist interiors. Stepped and layered profiles add depth for traditional and transitional spaces. Fluted casing introduces classical detailing. Choose a profile that complements your baseboard and crown molding style.

2. Width and Proportion

Standard casing width is 2.5-3.5 inches. For grand entries and high-ceiling rooms, 4-6 inch casing creates appropriate scale. The casing width should be proportional to the door height — taller doors need wider casing.

3. Material Selection

Stone composite offers durability and a premium finish for high-traffic areas. Plaster is ideal for painted finishes and seamless integration with walls. MDF provides cost-effective consistency for large projects with many doorways.

Frequently Asked Questions

What width casing works for standard interior doors?

For standard 80-inch interior doors, 2.5-3.5 inch casing is appropriate. For 96-inch doors or grand entries, 4-5 inch casing maintains proper proportion. The casing should be roughly 1/20 of the door height.

Can trim be customized to match existing moldings?

Yes. Through our Custom Program, we can match existing profile shapes, dimensions, and finishes. Send us a photo and measurements of your existing trim, and we will create matching pieces.

How are stone composite trim pieces installed?

Stone composite trim installs with construction adhesive and finishing nails, similar to wood trim. Joints are filled with color-matched caulk. The material can be cut with standard woodworking tools.
