Specifying Columns & Millwork

Architectural millwork requires precision in both design and execution. This guide helps you specify with confidence.

1. Match Profile to Architectural Style

Classical orders (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian) suit traditional and neoclassical interiors. Simplified geometric profiles work for contemporary and transitional spaces. Fluted columns add texture and shadow play. Smooth columns offer a cleaner, more modern aesthetic.

2. Choose Material for the Environment

For interior residential use, high-density polyurethane offers cost-effectiveness and easy installation. For hospitality and commercial projects requiring durability, GRG or natural stone provides lasting quality. For exterior or high-moisture applications, specify stone or marine-grade materials.

3. Proportional Sizing

Column diameter should be roughly 1/8 to 1/10 of the column height for classical proportions. Base and capital details should scale accordingly. For window and door surrounds, the casing width should be proportional to the opening size — typically 3–5 inches for standard doors, wider for grand openings.

4. Installation Considerations

Provide rough-in dimensions before production. Our team can supply detailed shop drawings for approval before manufacturing begins. For load-bearing columns, structural engineering specifications must be provided separately.
